Abstract

The International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) recommends lung transplantation for patients with end-stage chronic lung disease who have a high risk of mortality (>50%) within 2 years if not transplanted, coupled with a high probability (>80%) of short- and long-term survival. This document attempts to address some of the most common indications for lung transplantation. Other indications exist for which a transplant center may be asked to evaluate lung transplant eligibility. The underlying diagnosis should be considered on a case-by-case basis, with particular attention to understanding the risk of recurrence, comorbidities, and extrapulmonary involvement.
