CURRENT OVERVIEW OF LUNG TRANSPLANTATION IN RIO DE JANEIRO

Lung transplantation (TxP) is today a therapeutic option for patients with severe and terminally stages of pulmonary diseases, such as pulmonary fibrosis (PF), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) among other chronic diseases and recently proved to be feasible and effective in patients with acute diseases with severe and irreversible damage (SARS-COV 2/COVID-19). Although consolidated therapy, with well-defined indications and with sensitive drug and technological advances, greatly improving their results; It is still performed much lower number than the estimated need in Brazil (93 of 1,701 TxP/year according to RBT/ABTO 2024). This article makes a brief analysis of the current overview of lung transplantation in Brazil, with an emphasis on the state of Rio de Janeiro, addressing its history, indications, legislation, challenges, advances and future perspectives, searching for a reflection on how to bring this treatment to whom need it.
